This activity is designed to support the following Learning Objectives:

  • Students will research a subject in early US history using both primary and secondary sources. Such assignments will require students to synthesize information from more than one source, evaluate the sources, and develop a thoughtful, analytical conclusion at the end of the paper. Papers will be graded based on presentation of evidence, organization, and the quality of analysis in the argument.

Instructions

Your assignment is to choose one of the following prompts and write an essay.  You must include 3 to 5 sources (your textbook is not one of them; neither is Wikipedia).  

The essay must be a minimum of 800 words, maximum 1000 words in length.  It must follow MLA format and it must have a separate works cited. Please submit it through this assignment. If there is a problem, please email me a copy.

Prompt choices:

  1. Many controversial domestic issues have divided the American people. The United States government has taken action to address these issues.

    Identify one controversial domestic issue that has divided the American people (from 1877 to 2020) and:

    • Discuss the historical background of the controversy

    • Explain the point of view of those that supported the issue

    • Explain the point of view of those who opposed the issue

    • Discuss one United States government action that was taken

      to address the issue
