This is a Research Proposal for my Masters Thesis on the topic ‘Multilingualism in Contemporary Gambian Literature’.
The research will aim to focus on multilingualism in Gambian Literature. In recent years, many Gambian writers have written books mainly in English, which is the official language of the country. Most of these books are not purely English Language but contain internal multilingualism which is the local dialects. These local dialects aim to provide first-hand narratives of the stories in the books. The research will therefore highlight the role of multilingualism in the literature of the Gambia, reasons for the use of different dialects/languages and the impact these languages have on Gambian literature.
