(The purpose of writing a persuasive essay is to convince, motivate, or move readers towards a certain point of view or opinion. The act of trying to persuade automatically implies more than one opinion on the subject could be argued. Your task is to convince your audience of your point of view on your chosen topic using the methods listed in these guidelines.)

(The structure of this essay is to organize it with the following principles in mind. The essay will be SIX paragraphs.

1. A strong introduction that introduces the issue: should contain the thesis and forecast (1 paragraph)
2. Contains an opposing viewpoint with adequate use of concession (1 paragraph)
3. Provides strong evidence in support of you claim through details and examples (3 paragraphs)
4. An effective conclusion: rephrase your thesis, provide a brief summary, and end with a final thought)

(The thesis: A strong, clear thesis statement should be your point of view on the topic )

(The forecast should immediately follow the thesis statement. This sentence will be a listing sentence that lists the 3 main points that you will cover in your three body paragraphs. Review the “Writing the Forecasting Sentence” slideshow in Supplementary Materials.)

(Opposing View: Your essay should contain 1 paragraph immediately after the introductory paragraph that acknowledges and explains a point of view that may conflict with your own. This paragraph must also concede limitations to your own view; thereby setting a measured tone for the essay. See Success chapter 10.9 for more on concession and opposing views.)

(Body Paragraphs: Your three body paragraphs will discuss three main points (as laid out in the forecast) to support your side of the issue. Use examples and details to illuminate your points clearly.)

(Conclusion: Your conclusion will 1) rephrase the thesis, 2) provide at least 3 sentences of summary, and 3) end with a compelling and final though. Use your forecast to build your summary: provide one sentence for each of your 3 main points.)
