<
Consult the Week One lecture slides for further details of the assignment <
(word limit, bibliography, sexist language etc.). Also take note of the grading <
guide posted on Canvas. <
<
1. Outline and critically asses the conception of culture that Patten defends in <
Chapter Two of Equal Recognition. <
<
2. Why does culture matter, according to Patten? Is his account more or less <
right or more or less wrong? <
<
3. What does it mean to conceive of state neutrality as a downstream value? <
Should we accept or reject this way of thinking about neutrality? <
<
4. Outline Patten’s case for equal recognition as it pertains to minority <
cultures. Is it more or less right or more or less wrong? <
<
5. Outline and critically discuss Patten’s characterization of the <
immigrant/national minority dichotomy. <
<
6. Compare Patten’s theory of minority rights to a theory proposed by a <
previous thinker we have read in this class. The thinker in question should be <
one who was not a main subject of one of your previous essays. Is Patten’s <
view ultimately better or worse than that of the previous thinker? <
<
Students can also design their own prompt subject to instructor approval. <
Consult with Professor Lamey if this option interests you. <
