You have been asked to submit a research proposal to a funding agency to examine a topic related to criminology/criminal justice that is of interest to you. Your 10-page proposal (not including cover page and reference page) should include all of the following:
1. Statement of the Problem: What is the problem you want to research? Give a short clear overview.
2. Literature Review: Present the most relevant findings from the literature, the ones which provide the background, and prepare a context for your proposal.
3. Hypothesis and Variables: What is your suggested explanation? You need to state your proposed explanation as a hypothesis to start to show how you would test it. Example: “Women of color receive harsher sentences than white women.” You want to be sure to specify the dependent variable(s), the independent variable(s), and control variable(s) and explain the relevance in your study.
Be sure to explain why the included variables are good measures of the concepts you intend to examine. There are probably several ways to measure any concept; although no measurement operation is perfect, some are fairly good, and some are inadequate. Think about the various ways of measuring each variable, and choose one which seems likely to be accurate as well as feasible. Explain and justify your choices. One way to do this is to mention alternative possibilities that you have considered and discarded.
4. Research Design: What type of research design are you going to use? Explain what your design is going to be and say why the design is a good choice for dealing with your chosen problem. What population you are studying, and whether (and how) you will draw a sample to study this population. If you are proposing to study a sample of your population, explain how and why you will choose your sample. You should also be clear on whether you are studying people, or events, or something else (be aware of the level on which your analysis will be conducted).
5. Ethical Considerations: What are the ethical considerations associated with your proposal?
6. Informed Consent: Include your informed consent form.
7. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of your proposal
You should include a minimum of 7 scholarly references or peer-reviewed journals. APA formatting required.
