In summary of my expectations of this course are as follows: to obtain new skills, knowledge, of my scope and role as a FNP, that will be critical to a successful transition from a competent Registered nurse to a competent Family Nurse Practitioner. I hope to achieve this by having an open and professional dialect with my practicum preceptor. I feel that our clinical practicum is the foundation of FNP education. Our preceptors not only shape our clinical and examination skills but they also lay the foundation for how us as students effectively participate on interdisciplinary teams in future clinical practices (Todd et al, 2019). I also hope to enhance my effective communication skills with patients, and nursing colleagues, and other providers. I hope to identity and development promoted feelings of work satisfaction and competency. Some of my strengths as a registered nurse is, I am empathetic, I possess good communication skills with patients under my direct care as well as my colleagues, I can think critically, I am always eager to learn new things to enhance my knowledge as a nurse, and most important, I am respectful to the needs of my patients and people that I work with. Some of the challenges that I face as a student is being more confident in my craft as a competent practitioner. I also face challenges with the juggling school workload, with practicum requirements, full time job and family life with two growing kids. There are a lot of career goal I hope to achieve during my practicum experience. One of my career goals while working in the field is to obtain knowledge on alternative care and treatments that may help me positively enhance my role as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). One alternative approach is to learn about things like Telehealth. The COVID-19 pandemic extended barriers and affected populations that previously had easier access to health care services. Telehealth became one of the most effective ways to reach patients during this hard and trying time, and its use is becoming more normalized. (Hoffman, 2020). As a long term goal, I hope to one day practice independently, rendering care in my own primary care clinic. Florida along with 22 other states, have given NP a full practice authority licensure. According to American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), full practice authority says NP, based on their state, can practice independently and hold licensure to evaluate patients, diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic tests, initiate and manage treatment. This includes but is not limited to, prescribe medications. NP’s are able to provide care under the exclusive authority of the state board of nursing (Peterson, 2017). Reference: Hoffman D.A.
