The assignment is that you write a short biography of a person who lived and worked in the United States between 1900 and 1940, explaining how and why the message of the person’s life that you have selected provides testimony witnessing the injustices confronting workers of his or her or their historical period.
You may not select a famous leader but must describe a person who was a worker in a particular occupation, industry or social movement that gave meaning to work and workers’ destiny in the Twentieth Century.
Answering this question means looking beyond what a person has said or not said about their life. The challenge is to examine the message that you discern in actions, decisions, what the person experienced and/or what the person suffered and/or tried to change.

Secondary Sources: Full-length books such as biographies, films and other works of art such as portraits and sculpture, as well as research articles analyzing the twentieth-century person whom you have chosen as your subject. Secondary sources are usually created after the period in which your subject lived and intend to explain or assess historical significance.

documentary for this week is 17 years old, but the issues that Frontline explored in 2005 are still revenant to the our society today.  Additionally, according to a 2014 study of Los Angeles County, the average cost of jailing an individual with serious mental illness exceeds $48,500 per year. By comparison, the price tag for providing Assertive Community Treatment, or ACT, and supportive housing— one of the most intensive, comprehensive, and successful intervention models in use today—amounts to less than $20,500 annually, just two-fifths the cost of jail.

This assignment is the second in a series of 4 assignments on the same topic, due in Weeks 2, 5, 8, and 10. The assignments build upon each other.
Assume you are an investigative reporter for a major publication (magazine or newspaper) who has been assigned to research important issues (ethnic, racial, gender, or class) that are causing problems and affecting people in a local area, workplace, or specific part of the world. Your goal is to provide both an in-depth analysis of and put a human face on this issue by writing a series of articles that the editor plans to publish in two major parts. For this assignment, you will write Part 1 of your series of articles, which focuses on the history, current issues, problems caused by the issues, and proposed changes.
Part 2, due in Week 8, will focus on the benefits and challenges of the proposed change(s) as well as responses to the challenges.
