Simultaneous or concurrent environmental hazards are far from rare. The 1923 earthquake, which hit Tokyo and Yokohama, led to an inferno fanned (rather than extinguished) by a typhoon, with over 100,000 dead. One of the largest volcanic eruptions of the 20th century, Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines in 1991 coincided with the landfall of a major typhoon. When it comes to concurrent disasters, social scientists are only beginning to explore the cumulative effect of multi-hazard exposure, and few have explored the social effects of multiple hazards layered onto one another (Laska et al. 2015, Lindell and Hwang, 2008; Mohammad and Peek, 2019 are notable exceptions).
For this project, you will have to research simultaneous or concurrent environmental hazards. You should focus on the occurrence of events that happened simultaneously with COVID – 19. Make sure you find at least six events that happened in the USA or elsewhere.
Define what concurrent or multiple disasters are.
Write a summary of each event.
Discuss the challenges encountered during these events. For instance, did everything went as planned?

Answer the question: This is not a ‘Greatest Hits’ of what you know about regulatory
and participatory environmental policy instruments. I am asking you to compare
systematically (to each other!) their strengths and weaknesses. This may require a
short (!) explanation of what these two types of policy instruments are, but other than
that do not lose the plot – focus on the strengths and weaknesses. Nothing else!
• Prioritise breadth over depth: This means that an essay that identified and discussed
seven strengths and weaknesses, and which remained relatively superficial in doing
so due to space restrictions, will receive a better mark than a piece of work that
identified two strengths and weaknesses only, but presented them in depth. I am
interested in the big picture.
• Reasoned opinions: Do not only mention the strengths and weaknesses, but explain
what it is, within the logic of regulatory and participatory policy instruments, that

Readings: Use the essential and recommended readings extensively and harvest
their list of references or the University Library catalogue for further readings that may
strengthen your answer. Avoid referencing the lectures themselves. Instead look for
• Structure: Every text should have section headlines. Every! No matter which unit you
study and in which context you write a text. Headlines are a must. Make sure that the
headlines reflect the contents of whatever follows. It is not very useful to have
headlines such as “Rome”, “Paris” or “Stockholm” when the text under “Rome” covers
Rome and Berlin and the text under “Stockholm” covers Lisbon and Madrid. The last
sentence of your intro should offer a short summary of how you have organised your
essay. Make sure that the introduction and conclusion together do not exceed 15 per
cent of the overall word count. Keep the rest for the main part of your essay.
• Writing: Do not waffle – simply answer the question. The word count is a great
challenge here, so do not waste precious words with off-topic statements about the
importance of environmental policy making or about the difficulty to tackle
contemporary challenges such as climate change or biodiversity loss. Be concise.
This does not mean: to say less. It means: say the same with fewer words. Do not
repeat yourself all the time.
