Homework #2
Measuring COVID-19 Mortality
(10 points)
Due on March 11th, submit on ELMS
We have talked about different measures of mortality in class. In this homework, I would like you to do a little research on different measures of rates associated with COVID-19. Two measures, that is, COVID-19 mortality rate (deaths per 100,000 population), and COVID-19 case fatality ratio, are most commonly reported. As of February 28th, 2022, the U.S. has 950,490 deaths associated with COVID-19 and 79,045,043 confirmed cases ( https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/region/united-states ). As such, COVID mortality rate in the U.S. is 290 per 100,000. The case fatality ratio is 1.2% (https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/data/mortality). Please answer the following questions:
1)     How are these two rates/ratios calculated? Are these good measures? What are the advantages and disadvantages associated with each measure?
2)     Look up these statistics for your country of selection for the Country Demographic Profile (You can use the Johns Hopkins University website as mentioned above). How do they compare with the U.S.? Are they better off or worse off than the U.S.? What factors could bias the comparison? What other information do you think would be helpful to know? Would you propose some other measures to use?
3)     To get a better estimate of COVID related mortality, demographers also rely on another measure, referred to as “excess mortality.” The basic idea is that you compare deaths in the most recent period with historical trends. Research on this concept and explain how “excess mortality” could help to refine the measurement of COVID mortality.

The United States Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882, which prohibited Chinese workers from entering the United States for ten years. United States Representative Herman Stump of Maryland was the chairman of the Immigration Committee driving the effort to renew the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act. Compiled from testimonies describing the Chinese as criminals, drug users, and undesirable to America, Representative Stumps report reinforced the committees recommendation to renew the Act. (In 1893, Stump was appointed as Superintendent of Immigration by President Grover Cleveland.)
A thorough analysis of Representative Stumps report requires that you:
Place the document within its larger historical context.
What themes and issues are represented in the document?
Identify the major point(s), purpose(s), and intended audience(s) of the document.
Make at least two historical conclusions about the perception of the Chinese presence as a threat to America.
Essay requirements:
Minimum of two complete double-spaced pages with 12-point, Times New Roman font, standard margins.
Comprehensive format
introduction
thesis statement
specific examples (this does not mean large quotes from the text)
citations (APA, MLA, or Turabian) (No page number for the provided primary document, just United States House of Representatives Immigration Committee Report, Congressional Record, October 1892)
conclusion
Sources other than the document, lecture notes and the textbook are NOT required, but are left to the discretion of the author.
**TIPS**
Keep the primary source (Representative Stumps report) as the focal point of your analysis.
Show your reader how this document connects to the larger history it is a part of.
Tell your reader about it how do you explain news stories, personal accounts, or political speeches of today? Do this the same way.
THE FOLLOWING IS JUST TO HELP YOU THINK – THESE ARE NOT SPECIFIC QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED
Imagine that a friend who knows nothing about history asked you about this document, what would you say if asked:
Whats were things like when he wrote it? (historical context)
Why did he write it? (themes and issues)
What is the document about? (major points)
Who does Representative Stump want to read it? (intended audience)
What impact does Representative Stump want it to have? (purpose)
Why does he want that to happen? (historical conclusions)
What did happen? (historical conclusion)
To earn a high score, your essay should have a strong thesis statement that includes historical conclusions and uses clear evidence and historical context from the document and covered material to prove them.

You must select one of the following prompts for your essay:
1. A recurring motif in The Merchant of Venice is blood. How is blood represented in The Merchant of Venice? Choose specific examples of how blood is presented in the play, what it symbolizes, the religious allusions it represents (contrasting Shylock’s Jewish faith with the Christian faith of the other characters). In what ways does blood unite and divide people?
2. Analyze the characterization of Bassanio in the play.  How does he relate to the other characters in the play, especially Portia and Antonio? Does he have genuine feelings for either of them, or is it purely transactional? What could Shakespeare have been trying to present with his depiction of Bassanio? Analyze specific scenes from the play that show interactions between these characters in order to support your argument.
3. Consider Shylock’s rhetoric throughout the play, especially his famous speech at the end. In what ways does Shylock confirm or contradict stereotypes of Jews prevalent throughout this period (do not assume – you must research what these stereotypes actually were)? What does Shakespeare accomplish by rendering Shylock simultaneously unlikable, yet sympathetic?

Focus on the terms and concepts presented in Section 1: Fundamentals. In your paper describe how the artwork you’re looking at makes use of the Elements and Principles of art. Your paper is 800 words minimum. If it’s not, you’ll get a zero! I’m not kidding.
You are reviewing ONE art exhibition from one of the approved gallery or museum websites during the duration of this course
You are discussing at least three different works of art within that exhibition using terms from the book
You have at least the name of the Gallery, name of the Exhibition, titles of the pieces, the names of the artists who made those pieces, and the medium of the works you’re reviewing.

Ok so you have to answer a discussion question in 1 page. Here is everything below for the discussion:
Since the end of World War II, globalization of world markets has been increasing.
The main characteristics of globalization include free flow of goods and services
(international trade), and capital (foreign direct investments), less government intervention,
and regional and global integration. In addition, globalization is strengthened by cross-
national cooperation and institutions such as the World Trade Organization, the World
Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Globalization is supported by the argument
that international trade and foreign direct investments result in a better allocation of
resources.
In the last few years however, international trade and foreign direct investments
have been challenged as a growing number of governments have been questioning the
benefits of free flow of goods, services, and capital. In particular, the United Kingdom has
left the European Union (Brexit), the North American Free Trade Agreements (NAFTA)
has been revised, the United Stated is threatening to reduce or even eliminate its
contributions to international institutions. As a result, tariffs have started to rise, and
multinational enterprises are under increasing pressures to reduce their operations in
foreign countries and invest more in their home countries.
Question: Do you favor globalization of world markets?
Instructions:
Your answer should be one single-spaced page or less (but at least 10 sentences). Also, cite inside your answer (e.g.: MacMillan, 2020) two recent articles (no older than 2018) from business periodicals such as Business Week, Forbes Magazine, Fortune Magazine, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, or any other relevant popular press (no textbook, Wikipedia, or academic journal). At the end of your answer, provide
complete references of both articles.
