Overview: The objective of this research essay is to identify a culture outside of the United States or subculture within the U.S. (minority group) and research this culture in relation to one of the topics listed below or other topic that relates to the field of cultural anthropology. You may select any culture or group, so long as you are able to find enough valid information and references to construct an essay that contains the requirements listed below.

❖ Death rituals
❖ Marriage rituals
❖ Beliefs in magic and the supernatural
❖ Mythologies and its effects on this culture ❖ The role of storytelling
❖ Rites of passage
❖ Any aspect of cultural “performance”
❖ Different “ranks” in society (peasants, royalty, class, caste, etc.)

❖ Race and ethnicity, and implications of
such divisions

Part One: The first portion of the essay should focus on the following: A detailed description of the culture, topic, and the characteristics of the topic within the given culture (who/what/when/where/why/how), and any historical aspects related to the topic within the culture. There should be an emphasis on why the topic is practiced in such a way, and the overall meaning and significance for the cultural inhabitants. The information found in the research should be presented in a non-bias fashion that represents an anthropological mind at work and original thought. Part One will be assessed by how well the questions are answered with clear, evidence-based information with proper in-text citations. (40 points)
Part Two: This portion of the essay should demonstrate an understanding of the course material and ability to apply that knowledge to the research discussed in the first portion of the essay. This will be accomplished by discussing four specific examples from the course material that relate to the
research. These should be indicated by specific headings for each example. The discussion of each connection to our course material should provide a clear understanding of the example and appropriate anthropological connections to the research. (20 points)
Reference list: At least five references should be used.
Format: APA Style; follow the basic formatting guidelines but don’t worry about including an abstract. Double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 point font.
Length: Minimum of five pages in length (not including the title page and reference pages).

This assessment allows you to practice your problem-solving and self/social-awareness skills as you analyze how your personal experiences and perspective influence how you make decisions when examining artifacts that illustrate diverse and ethical perspectives.
You will choose a cultural artifact and, in a 2–3 pages of writing, analyze it using the strategies you’ve learned from the provided resources. You’ll explore how your personal experiences and perspective may have influenced your reaction to the artifact. By using these strategies, you’ll:
Be better equipped with information to help you make more objective and informed decisions.
Solve complex problems and think through situations related to diversity and ethics.
Build relationships and collaborate in the workplace and at home.
As you follow these steps to analyze a cultural artifact, you are actively practicing the process of thinking through a problem and breaking it down into its parts.
Additionally, self-awareness, social awareness, and articulation are critical in navigating the workplace and working with others, whether at work or home. This assessment will leverage what you have learned about the human experience and understand what perspectives you hold and how they impact the choices and decisions you make.
Instructions
1. Start by writing an introductory paragraph that states which artifact you chose.
Describe the artifact itself. Identify additional information about the artifact such as the artist or musician, when it was created, and materials used.
If it’s a painting, what materials were used?
If it’s a piece of music, how long is the piece?
Explain what about it appealed to you, including things about yourself that might influence why you chose it.
2. Describe the historical and artistic contexts of the artifact.
Describe the historical context such as the time period, the place, and reasons why the artist might have had for creating the artifact.
Describe the artistic context such as the visual and aural techniques and symbols. Include reasons that explain why these techniques were used.
3. Connect to the cultural values conveyed through the artifact.
Identify two cultural values that you believe the artist was trying to convey through the artifact.
Relate the artist’s cultural values to your own. Examine the similarities or differences that you see between your cultural values and the artist’s cultural values.
4. Reflect on what you learned about how culture shapes our perspectives and impacts the decisions you make about the meaning of the cultural
artifact.
Explain how your cultural perspective shaped your response and connection with the artifact.
5. Write in a well-organized and concise manner that adheres to the rules of grammar, usage, mechanics, and formatting.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Your submission should meet the following requirements:
Length: 2–3 pages of text, in addition to a title page and reference page.
Written communication: Written communication should be free of errors that detract from the overall message.
Formatting: Format your submission in APA style, with a title page, double spacing, and a reference page.
Citations: Properly cite sources according to APA rules. Review Evidence and APA for more information on how to cite your sources.

The paper must be double-spaced, using 12-point font (Times New Roman) with one inch margins (top/bottom and left/right) with a narrative that is between 750 and 1,000 words or 3 to 4 pages of text. While it is OK if you go over the limit, papers less than 750 words will result in point value deductions. Also, please keep in in mind that the cover page that includes your name and country selected is NOT part of the page limit.

Relevant Disability Demographics Pertaining to this Country
Identify the other country that you selected that you intend to compare with the United States and provide a brief reason why you selected this country. You may have visited this country before, plan to visit it sometime in the future or simply have some other interest. If you have no specific reason then that is fine as well. This introduction should only take a few sentences to explain.
Once you select your country of interest, provide recent statistical information (within past three years) that includes general geography (where country located), DISABILITY demographics on the population you selected as it applies to: (a) age groupings (approximate percent by different age categories), (b) educational achievement levels (high school and college graduation rates of this group) and information about the education system (mainstreamed or segregated schools), (c) un/employment rates and type of work performed (unskilled v. skilled labor and type of employment being full-time or part-time), and (d) demographics by ethnicity/race and gender). As it relates to education and employment, indicate how these outcome data compares with that to United States in relation the specific disability group of interest. For example, we know from the class, that the unemployment rate of PWD can vary between 60% and 80%, depending on disability. Applicable Laws, Policies and Ratification of UNCRPD
Identify and briefly explain the major laws and policies pertaining to PWD in the country you have selected and, if relevant, describe if there are any special considerations or laws for the particular disability group that you selected as it relates to this country. For example, is there similar legislation that pertains to public access and services, employment and education similar to the ADA and IDEA that exists in the United States? If so, what are similar applicable laws and are there any noticeable differences between this country and the United States (e.g., ADA, IDEA)? Also, what is the status of this country’s ratification (or not) of the U.S. Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities? Looking at the comparison country’s healthcare system (medical care for all v. private insurance, mortality rate for this disability group, access to medical and social services, history of institutionalization) and educational system (mainstream v. “specialized schools”) what do you conclude as to which disability model(s) we discussed in Week 3 does this country apply to this specific disability? From what you know of this country that you read about or saw on YouTube videos, how do you believe PWD are treated? Do you see this country has a more evolved view as to how they treat this group of PWD than what exists in the United States? Thus far in the course, we have explored and analyzed some of the ways that culture, as enacted in language and literary issues and/or texts, engender different ways of seeing and knowing which in turn affect both perception of and policy towards “the other” across various contexts. Now is your chance to complete a deeper analysis of one example of a cultural event or cultural product that has/had political implications of one kind or another.
You will choose one of the following approaches to your paper:
Analyze the political implications of a cultural representation in a novel, film, television show*, poem, song, music video, cartoon, painting or other artwork of your choosing.
If you choose this option, you will consider our discussions on the novels, poems, and music videos we have analyzed in class and bring these methods of analysis to a new text of your choosing. You might make an argument about how the cultural representation you choose reinforces a particular political narrative, or takes an implicit stand on a political issue. You might analyze the political implications of the use of language or consider how the representation in question “writes back” to previous representations. The paper will depend on close reading of the piece of art itself. Keep in mind that your analysis can be a critique.
Make an analytical argument about a political controversy (past or recent) surrounding a cultural product (novel, film, song, music video, cartoon, statue or literary translation) or media representation.
If you choose this option, your analysis will focus on describing the political context surrounding the event or controversy rather than a close reading of the text itself. You will make an argument about how and why the particular cultural product became the center of the political controversy under question.

For either essay approach, in order to help establish the context of your discussion and support your argument, you must use at least two secondary (scholarly) sources; these secondary sources may include both course readings and outside material. You may choose to include more than two scholarly sources. For Option 2, in particular, you may also need to include additional popular media sources to provide context.
