Instructions
For this project, you will write a recommendation report. One way to think of a recommendation report is that it identifies a problem and proposes a solution to that problem. It analyzes and compares multiple solutions, but ultimately it forwards one solution as the best option based on its analysis of the information collected, and the criteria based on the audience’s needs.
For example: a student could write a recommendation report that attempts to address an office manager’s concern that the office is producing too much waste (garbage). After defining the problem by researching the current degree of waste produced by the office, the student then inquires into options for reducing this waste. This might include using different packaging for outgoing mail, reusing envelopes for internal communications, or utilizing digital documents instead of print documents when possible. The criteria used to determine whether certain solutions are viable could be such things as price, convenience, etc. Based on the information collected about the waste being produced, and research into strategies for reducing waste, this student would make some specific recommendations supported by the results of his or her research.
In some cases, it’s not a bad idea to write a recommendation report to yourself, choosing a major decision that you need to make and doing research to guide that decision. In the past students have used the recommendation report assignment as a way to help them make major decisions, such as what graduate school to go to, or what car to buy. Other students have been able to find real-world problems at work for which they were able to make recommendations. The problem or question that your recommendation report addresses is up to you, but you must have your topic approved. The instructor will read your report proposal memo and let you know whether your topic and approach are appropriate.
Components of the Report
Your finished report will be accompanied by a transmittal letter that can be saved in a separate file or placed within the report after the cover page. Although there are various formats for recommendation reports, the final report for this class should have the following sections (some of which will likely be broken into several subsections):
Cover Page – see the textbook for appropriate content and format
Transmittal Letter, on letterhead you design; this letter does 3 things: 1. lets the reader know what is being sent and why, 2. establishes goodwill with the reader, 3. provides expectations for response (i.e. “please call me by Next Tuesday . . . )
Table of Contents
List of Illustrations (if applicable), lists every titled chart or figure
Executive Summary, in which you summarize the rest of the report
Introduction, in which you describe the overall problem you will address and provide background information
Methods, in which you describe the research and analysis methods you employed to inquire into the problem and reach your conclusion; this should also address the criteria you apply to the information you collect in order to make your recommendation
Results, in which you present the results of your inquiries
Conclusions, in which you articulate what the results mean (i.e. you analyze the information you found)
Recommendations, in which you make your specific recommendations
Appendix, (if applicable) in which any supplementary documents are placed

You are asked to write a 3-4 page (double spaced) film analysis paper. This type of paper is called a “thematic essay” These are the steps to take:
1. Choose a film (or television show) that is related to technology.
2. Research background information about the film (when was it made, actors, summary of plot)
3. Determine a theme that you notice throughout the chosen film
Outline of paper:
1. Introduction
– Hook
– Background information (of film)
-Thesis (introduce your main theme)
2. Body
-3 to 4 points of the film that support your theme. Make sure to use specific examples found in the film.
3. Conclusion
– Restated thesis and summary of main points
– Final thought: how does the film reflect real-life issues in our society? (how does it connect to reality)

Alternative Project
“The Mystery of the Animal Tracks” Story
If you prefer, you may write a one and a half or two-page story, typed and
double spaced, using 12-point font with either Times New Roman or Calibri
style font, in which you create a mystery using animal tracks. The story may
be entirely made up or based in fact. (You may even pretend you live
somewhere that is not where you actually live!) However, any use you make of
animal tracks must be based in fact. In other words, if you solve the
mystery using the type of tracks you’ve found; explain real “clues” which are
about what those tracks are like.
Some ideas: perhaps something from around your yard is missing, or
destroyed, and you need to “track down” the culprit. How would you do this,
using animal tracks? You will probably need to go online or to the library to
find out about particular animal tracks in order to do this. You may need to
find out what kinds of things different animals like to do, when they invade
humans’ homes-again, this part should be based in fact.
The mystery may be simple–just trying to find out whose tracks are left
behind, where something mysterious has occurred-or it may be more
complicated than that, if you wish.

A strong, clear, and arguable THESIS about the primary text or monster.
A close reading of key textual passages or specific images or features of your primary text.
Citation of at least one primary and 4 secondary sources in the essay.
General online sources do not count. Though you can and should consult general online sources such as wikis, online bios, and literary information sites (SparkNotes, etc.), these sources will NOT count as one of the 4 secondary sources. You should minimize your use and dependence on these sources if you hope to write a successful paper. Start there and then move on.
2 of the sources must be “scholarly.” The Cohen article that we read together fits this category. Other sources that we locate as a class that have a general interest will be placed on Blackboard in the READINGS or MONSTER RESEARCH tabs. If you need help evaluating a source, ask me. And remember that you can use the works cited lists and bibliographies of sources to locate other sources.
You must do a database search for articles and include at least ONE source that you discover through database research. The most useful databases are likely to be the Literary Research Center and EBSCOhost Academic Search Premier. The psychology databases might also prove interesting. Ellie Horowitz will introduce us to database research in the library class.
One of the 4 required secondary sources can be another literary or pop-cultural work (tv show, etc). You can discuss as many works as you like but be sure you are clear about what your primary text is. And regardless of how many literary sources you include, the 2 scholarly sources are still required.
In-text citations must be complete and accurate.
You will use either MLA or APA style, depending on which is the style used in your major.

PLEASE USE THE OUTLINE DOWN BELOW AS A GUIDE
THESE ARE THE ARTICLES THAT I NEED YOU TO USE FOR EVIDENCE AND I NEED YOU TO FIND TWO MORE.

Professor’s Prompt: For today’s writing exercise we’ll be thinking about the nature of change. In our class this semester we have contemplated how technological changes produce a myriad of reactions in our society from joyful excitement to fury. Let’s broaden our meditation today on the nature of technological change and consider this essay by Rebecca Solnit “Why Did We Stop Believing That People Can Change (Links to an external site.)?” where she contemplates the capacity for individuals to change.
2. After reading, ask yourself what you believe about the power of individuals to change and what you notice about society’s hesitation to believe in this possibility. How might this connect to the anxieties we discuss technological change?
Additionally, consider this question Rebecca Solnit poses in the essay:
“Are you who you used to be? Specifically, are you the person who made that mistake, held that view now regarded as reprehensible or ignorant, committed that harm years or decades ago?
